How to stay lean on holiday in Bali (without missing out)
By The Solimans team · Yousri Soliman’s kitchen in Bali · Updated
You can stay lean on holiday in Bali without living on salads. The trick is to make most meals simple and protein-led, then enjoy the rest properly: plan two meals a day, have one meal out that you genuinely look forward to, keep drinks sensible and stay active. Bali makes the active part easy, with surf, beaches, gyms and scooters that still leave you walking more than at home.
This is general guidance, not a weight-loss promise. Everyone's body responds differently, and if you have a medical condition, speak to a doctor or dietitian.
Why do people gain weight on holiday in Bali?
It is rarely one big meal. It is the small extras stacking up:
- Drinks. Sunset beers, cocktails at beach clubs and sweet iced teas.
- Café portions. Big brunches, smoothie bowls, banana bread and pastries.
- Fried food. Nasi goreng, mie goreng, fried snacks and krupuk.
- No routine. No regular meals, so you graze, skip, then over-eat at night.
- Less protein. Many holiday meals are carb- and fat-heavy, which leaves you hungrier.
What is the simplest way to stay lean on holiday?
The 2 + 1 rule:
| Meal | Approach |
|---|---|
| Meal 1 (breakfast) | Protein-led and planned: eggs, yoghurt, or a delivered meal |
| Meal 2 (lunch) | Protein-led and planned: grilled meat or fish, vegetables, some carbs |
| Meal 3 (dinner) | Enjoy it. Warung, beach club or restaurant, without overthinking |
Two predictable meals give you a buffer, so one great dinner doesn't tip the balance. It also suits how most people actually holiday: busy days, social evenings.
How many calories are in Bali holiday drinks?
Approximate figures; sizes and recipes vary a lot between bars.
| Drink | Approx. kcal |
|---|---|
| Large beer, e.g. Bintang (~620ml) | ~250 |
| Small beer (~330ml) | ~130–150 |
| Glass of wine (150ml) | ~120–130 |
| Spirit with soda water | ~65–100 |
| Mojito or margarita | ~200–300 |
| Piña colada or creamy cocktail | ~300–450 |
| Es teh manis (sweet iced tea) | ~100–150 |
| Fresh juice (large) | ~150–250 |
| Coconut water (one coconut) | ~45–60 |
Easy wins: alternate alcoholic drinks with water, choose spirits with soda over sugary cocktails, and ask for less sugar ("kurang manis" or "tanpa gula") in iced tea and coffee.
How do you eat out in Bali and stay lean?
- Choose grilled (bakar) over fried (goreng). Sate ayam, ikan bakar and ayam bakar are great choices.
- Ask for sauces on the side, especially peanut sauce.
- Go half rice and add an extra egg or tempeh.
- Share desserts and starters.
- Eat slowly at beach-club sunsets; the plates keep coming if you let them.
Our calories in Indonesian food guide has approximate numbers for nasi goreng, satay, nasi campur and more.
How do you stay active without trying too hard?
You don't need to train like you are at home. Bali makes movement part of the day:
- Walk the beach at sunrise or sunset. Echo Beach, Batu Bolong and Pererenan beaches are made for it.
- Surf or take a lesson. Paddling is a serious workout.
- Drop into a class: there are plenty of gyms, Muay Thai camps, yoga and Pilates studios around Canggu.
- Aim for a daily step target that is realistic for you.

How do you handle villa breakfasts and brunch?
Breakfast is where holiday calories quietly add up: pancakes, banana bread, smoothie bowls and fried eggs on white toast, every morning. None of them are bad, but they are often light on protein, so you are hungry again by late morning. A simple fix is to make breakfast the most predictable meal of the day: eggs, yoghurt with fruit, or a protein-led breakfast delivered to the villa. Save the big brunch for one or two mornings a week, when you can really enjoy it.
Will a week or two off ruin your progress?
No. A short holiday of eating a bit more and training a bit less rarely undoes months of work. Some of the scale jump after a big night out is water and food weight, not fat. What matters is what you do most of the time, and getting back to normal habits when you get home.
Should you try to lose weight on holiday?
That depends on you. Many people are happy just to come home at the same weight. If you do want to lose fat while you're here, a moderate deficit of roughly 300–500 kcal a day with high protein is the usual mainstream approach; see cutting and weight loss in Bali and our weight loss meal plan. Avoid crash diets: they rarely last past the flight home.
