Calories in Indonesian food: nasi goreng, mie goreng, satay and more
By The Solimans team · Yousri Soliman’s kitchen in Bali · Updated
Most popular Indonesian dishes land somewhere between 400 and 800 kcal a plate. Nasi goreng and mie goreng sit at the higher end with relatively little protein, while grilled dishes like sate ayam and ayam bakar give you far more protein per calorie. Every number for local dishes on this page is an approximate estimate: portions and frying oil vary from one warung to the next. The Solimans versions further down are the only ones with macros listed per dish.
How many calories are in common Indonesian dishes?
These are approximate ranges for a typical restaurant or warung portion. Real values can be well above or below them, depending on the cook, the portion and how much oil goes in.
| Dish (typical portion) | Approx. kcal | Approx. protein | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nasi goreng with fried egg | 550–800 | 15–25g | Mostly rice and oil |
| Mie goreng (plate) | 550–750 | 15–20g | Fried noodles, often with sweet soy |
| Mie goreng, instant packet | 350–450 | 7–9g | Per packet, cooked |
| Sate ayam, 10 sticks with peanut sauce | 400–550 | 30–40g | Add roughly 200–250 kcal with rice or lontong |
| Nasi campur | 600–900 | 20–35g | Depends entirely on what you pick |
| Gado-gado | 400–600 | 15–20g | Peanut sauce is most of the calories |
| Ayam goreng with rice | 700–900 | 30–40g | Fried skin-on chicken |
| Ayam bakar with rice | 600–750 | 35–45g | Grilled, usually leaner |
| Ikan bakar with rice | 500–700 | 30–40g | Grilled fish, one of the lightest mains |
| Soto ayam (bowl, no rice) | 300–450 | 20–25g | Broth-based chicken soup |
| Bakso (bowl) | 350–500 | 15–25g | Meatball soup with noodles |
| Babi guling plate | 700–900 | 30–40g | Rich, with crackling and sides |
| Tempe goreng (2 pieces, about 100g) | 250–350 | 18–20g | Good protein, but fried |
| Pisang goreng (2 pieces) | 250–350 | 2–4g | Fried banana snack |
The pattern is simple. Rice, noodles, frying oil and peanut sauce drive the calories up. Grilled meat and fish drive the protein up. If you are tracking, assume the higher end of each range for fried dishes.
Why is nasi goreng so high in calories for the protein?
A plate of nasi goreng is mostly fried rice. A generous portion of cooked rice alone can be 300–450 kcal, the oil used to fry it adds a lot more, and sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) adds sugar. The fried egg on top brings around 6–7g protein. That is why a filling plate can come in at 700 kcal with barely 20g protein. It is a lovely meal, just not a very efficient one if you are chasing a protein target or a calorie deficit.
How can you order lighter Indonesian food?
You don't need to skip local food to stay on track. A few easy swaps:
- Choose bakar over goreng. Grilled (bakar) chicken or fish instead of fried (goreng).
- Ask for sauce on the side. Especially peanut sauce on satay and gado-gado ("sambal kacang terpisah").
- Go half rice. Ask for "nasi setengah" and add an extra egg or tempeh.
- Load up at nasi campur. Pick vegetables, grilled chicken, egg and tempeh; go easy on the fried items and krupuk.
- Pick soups. Soto ayam is filling and usually lighter than a fried rice plate.
- Watch the drinks. Es teh manis and fresh juices can add a surprising amount of sugar.
How do the Solimans versions compare?
The Solimans kitchen cooks a few Indonesian and Southeast Asian classics with more protein and listed macros. These numbers come straight from the menu.
| Solimans meal | Menu | kcal | Protein | Carbs | Fat | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mie Goreng Chicken | Balanced | 846 | 81g | 72g | 26g | Rp 100K |
| Mie Goreng Shirataki | High Protein | 640 | 73g | 33g | 24g | Rp 100K |
| Mie Goreng Chicken (vegan chicken) | Vegan | 680 | 55g | 79g | 16g | Rp 90K |
| Solimans Chicken Satay with rice | Balanced | 689 | 63g | 71g | 17g | Rp 100K |
| Cauli Rice Chicken Satay | High Protein | 683 | 67g | 43g | 27g | Rp 100K |
| Solimans Chicken Sate (vegan chicken) | Vegan | 669 | 50g | 79g | 17g | Rp 90K |
| Rice Chicken Mashawi | Balanced | 647 | 52g | 58g | 23g | Rp 100K |
| Chicken Mashawi Fried Cauliflower Rice | High Protein | 664 | 58g | 36g | 32g | Rp 100K |
Compared with the rough local ranges above, the main difference is protein. A typical mie goreng might give you 15–20g; the Balanced Mie Goreng Chicken gives 81g, because it is built around chicken breast and egg rather than noodles alone. The High Protein versions swap noodles or rice for shirataki or cauliflower rice, which roughly halves the carbs. The vegan versions use plant-based chicken.

What about sambal, krupuk and kecap manis?
The extras matter more than you'd think. Sambal itself is usually low in calories, though some versions are fried in oil. Krupuk (prawn or cassava crackers) are deep-fried and easy to eat by the handful, so a small bag can add roughly 100–200 kcal without you noticing. Kecap manis, the sweet soy sauce in nasi goreng and mie goreng, is mostly sugar. None of this is a reason to skip them, just a reason to know where the calories hide.
Should you count calories on holiday?
That depends on your goal. If you are here for a few weeks of training or a cut, a rough count helps; if you are here to relax, choosing grilled over fried most of the time will do plenty. Our guide to staying lean on holiday in Bali covers the middle ground, and macros explained covers what the numbers mean.
If you want a target to aim at, the calculator gives you a daily calorie and protein estimate in under a minute.
The short version
Indonesian food is not the enemy of a fitness goal. Fried rice and fried noodles are calorie-dense and fairly low in protein; satay, grilled fish, ayam bakar and soto are easier wins. And if you want the flavours without the guesswork, every Solimans meal has its macros listed on the menu.

Questions
How many calories are in nasi goreng?+
A typical restaurant plate of nasi goreng with a fried egg is roughly 550–800 kcal, depending on the amount of rice and oil. Protein is usually modest, around 15–25g, unless you add extra chicken.
How many calories are in mie goreng?+
A plate of mie goreng is usually somewhere around 550–750 kcal with roughly 15–20g protein. Instant mie goreng packets are smaller, at roughly 350–450 kcal per packet.
Is chicken satay healthy?+
Sate ayam is one of the better local choices because it is grilled lean meat. Most of the extra calories come from the peanut sauce and any rice or lontong served with it, so ask for sauce on the side.
What is the healthiest Indonesian food to order?+
Grilled dishes (ayam bakar, ikan bakar, sate), soto ayam, gado-gado with sauce on the side, and plates with plenty of vegetables are usually lighter than fried rice, fried noodles or fried chicken.
Are these calorie numbers exact?+
No. Indonesian dishes vary a lot between warungs, and the oil used for frying makes a big difference. Treat the figures here as rough estimates. Solimans meals are the exception on this page, with macros listed for every dish.
Does The Solimans make Indonesian dishes?+
Yes, a few. The menu includes Mie Goreng Chicken, Solimans Chicken Satay and Chicken Mashawi with rice, plus lighter shirataki and cauliflower-rice versions on the High Protein menu.
