High-protein food in Bali: what to eat and where

By The Solimans team · Yousri Soliman’s kitchen in Bali · Updated

The best high-protein foods in Bali are chicken, eggs, tempeh, tofu and fresh fish, all of which are cheap and easy to find. The catch is portion size: a typical warung plate is mostly rice with a modest serving of protein. If you want 120g or more a day, you either order extra protein, cook for yourself, or use a meal plan that lists the protein in every meal. The Solimans delivers meals with 20–81g protein each across Canggu, Pererenan and Munggu.

What are the best protein sources in Bali?

Bali has more good protein on offer than people expect. The numbers below are approximate, vary with brand, cut and cooking method, and are meant as a rough guide, not lab values.

Food (typical serving) Approx. protein Approx. kcal Where you'll find it
Chicken breast, cooked (150g) 45g 250 Warungs (ayam bakar), cafés, supermarkets
Eggs (2 large) 12–14g 140–160 Everywhere, from warungs to breakfast cafés
Tempeh (100g) 19–20g 190–200 (more if fried) Warungs, supermarkets, traditional markets
Tofu, local tahu (100g) 8–12g 80–120 (more if fried) Warungs, supermarkets
Grilled fish, e.g. snapper or tuna (150g) 30–38g 180–250 Seafood warungs, beach grills
Prawns or squid (100g) 18–20g 90–110 Seafood restaurants, supermarkets
Beef, cooked (100g) 25–27g 220–250 Rendang, steakhouses, supermarkets
Plain Greek-style yoghurt (150g) 12–15g 100–150 Supermarkets and delis
Edamame (100g) 10–11g 120 Supermarkets, Japanese restaurants
Whey or plant protein shake (1 scoop) 20–25g 100–130 Gyms, cafés, supplement shops

Two things are worth knowing. First, chicken is the backbone of most local menus, and grilled versions (ayam bakar, sate ayam) are leaner than fried ones (ayam goreng). Second, tempeh is Indonesia's great gift to anyone chasing protein: fermented whole soybeans, firm enough to grill, and far more protein-dense than most local tofu.

Where can you find high-protein food in Bali?

Warungs

Local warungs are the cheapest option. A nasi campur typically costs around Rp 25K–40K, and you can usually point at what you want. Ask for two portions of chicken or add a fried egg and tempeh to push the protein up. The trade-off: rice portions are generous, sauces and frying oil add calories, and no one can tell you the macros.

Cafés and restaurants

Canggu's café scene has plenty of protein bowls, egg breakfasts and grilled fish. Prices are higher, often around Rp 80K–150K a dish, and portion sizes vary a lot between places. Some list calories; most don't.

Supermarkets and markets

If you have a kitchen, supermarkets around Canggu stock chicken breast, eggs, tempeh, tofu, Greek yoghurt and protein powder. Traditional markets are cheaper for eggs, tempeh and fish. Cooking gives you full control, but it takes time and a decent fridge.

Meal plan delivery

A meal plan does the counting for you. Every Solimans meal shows protein, carbs, fat and kcal on the menu, so you can build a day that hits your number without weighing anything.

How do you hit a high-protein target in Bali?

A practical approach for most people training regularly:

  1. Pick your number. Mainstream guidance for people who train hard is roughly 1.6–2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight. Our protein guide has a table by bodyweight.
  2. Anchor every meal with protein. Aim for roughly 30–60g per main meal rather than trying to catch up with shakes at night.
  3. Order protein first, carbs second. At a warung, double the chicken or add egg and tempeh before adding more rice.
  4. Keep an easy backup. Eggs, Greek yoghurt or a protein shake fill a gap on busy days.
  5. Use listed macros where you can. Solimans High Protein meals average 54g protein each, so two of them come to roughly 108g, which covers most of the day for many people.

What about protein for breakfast in Bali?

Breakfast is where many people fall furthest behind. Café menus lean on smoothie bowls, toast and pastries, which are often light on protein. Eggs are the easy fix: most cafés will add extra eggs to anything. The Solimans High Protein breakfasts are built on four eggs; the Egg Chicken Frittata Omelette has 64g protein in 561 kcal.

Is it cheaper to buy protein or order it?

Raw ingredients from a supermarket or market are usually cheaper per gram of protein, especially eggs and tempeh. Delivered meals cost more but save the shopping, cooking and guesswork. Solimans meals run Rp 85K–140K each, and most High Protein mains are Rp 100K. For a fuller cost comparison, see meal plan vs cooking vs eating out.

Questions

Is it hard to eat enough protein in Bali?+

Not if you plan for it. Many local plates are built around rice with a small portion of protein, so ordering extra chicken, egg or tempeh, or using a meal plan with listed macros, makes hitting a target much easier.

Which Solimans meal has the most protein?+

On the current two-week menu, the Mie Goreng Chicken on the Balanced menu has the most, at 81g protein and 846 kcal for Rp 100K. On the High Protein menu, the Chicken Tawook and Fattoush has 79g protein in 684 kcal.

How much protein is in tempeh?+
