How to get enough protein as a vegan in Bali

By The Solimans team · Yousri Soliman’s kitchen in Bali · Updated

To get enough protein as a vegan in Bali, build every meal around tempeh, tofu, legumes or a plant protein, and aim for roughly 30–50g per main meal. Indonesia makes this easier than most places, because tempeh, a fermented soybean cake with roughly 19–20g protein per 100g, is cheap and sold everywhere. Where people fall short is the rest of the plate: rice, noodles, fruit and smoothie bowls are easy to find, protein-dense plant food takes more intent.

How much protein do vegans need?

Plant-based or not, your target depends on bodyweight and training. Mainstream guidance for people training hard is roughly 1.6–2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day; less active adults need less. Some plant proteins are digested slightly less efficiently than animal protein, so many vegan athletes aim towards the upper end and mix sources across the day.

Bodyweight 1.6 g/kg 2.0 g/kg
55 kg 88g 110g
65 kg 104g 130g
75 kg 120g 150g
85 kg 136g 170g

What are the best vegan protein sources in Bali?

The numbers below are approximate and vary by brand and preparation.

Food (typical serving) Approx. protein Approx. kcal Notes
Tempeh (100g) 19–20g 190–200 Local, cheap, best all-rounder
Firm tofu (100g) 10–15g 120–150 Firmer tofu has more protein
Local soft tahu (100g) 7–9g 70–90 Common at warungs, often fried
Edamame (100g, shelled) 10–11g 120 Supermarkets, Japanese menus
Lentils, cooked (1 cup, ~200g) 17–18g 230 Supermarkets, Indian restaurants
Chickpeas, cooked (1 cup, ~160g) 14–15g 270 Hummus and falafel count too
Soy milk (250ml) 7–8g 80–130 Check for added sugar
Peanut butter (2 tbsp) 7–8g 190 Protein, but mostly fat
Soy or pea protein (1 scoop) 20–25g 100–130 Easiest top-up

Tempeh is the standout. It is firmer and nuttier than tofu, holds up on the grill, and you will find it at warungs (tempe goreng, tempe manis), supermarkets and traditional markets. Fried tempeh absorbs oil, so the calories rise while the protein stays roughly the same.

Why do vegans in Bali often fall short on protein?

Canggu has plenty of vegan cafés, but a lot of the menu is smoothie bowls, acai, rice bowls and pastries. They are delicious and mostly carbohydrate. A smoothie bowl might give you 8–15g protein; a warung plate of rice, vegetables and a small piece of tofu might give you 15–20g. Do that three times a day and you end up well under 100g without noticing.

The fix is boring but effective: pick the protein first, then add the carbs.

How do you hit 100g+ protein a day as a vegan?

A simple structure that works for most people:

  1. Breakfast with 30g+. Tofu scramble, tempeh on toast, or oats made with soy milk and a scoop of plant protein.
  2. A protein-led lunch. Grilled tempeh or tofu with rice and vegetables, or a lentil or chickpea dish.
  3. A protein-led dinner. Same idea, a different source.
  4. One top-up. Edamame, soy milk or a shake if the day came up short.

Mixing sources (soy, legumes, grains, nuts) across the day covers the full range of amino acids, so there is no need to combine them in the same meal.

Is soy safe to eat every day?

For most people, yes. Tempeh, tofu and soy milk have been eaten daily across Indonesia and East Asia for generations, and mainstream nutrition guidance treats soy foods as a normal part of a healthy diet. If you have a soy allergy, a thyroid condition or another medical concern, talk to your doctor and lean on legumes, seitan or pea protein instead.
