Bulking in Bali: calories, protein and what to eat

By The Solimans team · Yousri Soliman’s kitchen in Bali · Updated

Bulking in Bali works the same way as anywhere else: eat a little more than you burn, get plenty of protein, and train hard. For a lean bulk, that means about 250–500 kcal a day above maintenance and 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg of bodyweight. What is different here is the heat, which tends to blunt appetite, and the café culture, which leans towards light food. This guide covers the numbers, how to deal with both, and a real example day from our menu.

This is general information for healthy adults. If you have a medical condition, talk to a doctor or dietitian before changing how you eat.

How many calories do you need to bulk?

Start with maintenance: the calories you would eat to keep your weight steady. Our macro calculator gives you an estimate from your height, weight, age and activity.

Work out your calories and proteinFree macro calculator that fills your week from our real menu.

Then add a modest surplus:

Approach Daily surplus Who it suits
Lean bulk (conservative) ~250 kcal Experienced lifters who want minimal fat gain
Lean bulk (standard) ~500 kcal Most people training hard 3–5 times a week
Bigger surplus 500+ kcal Rarely needed; more of the extra tends to go to fat

Weigh yourself under the same conditions a few mornings a week and look at the trend over two to three weeks, not day to day. As a rough guide, if your weight is not moving at all, add around 200 kcal; if it is climbing fast and your waist is growing with it, pull back a little.

How much protein do you need?

For people who train hard, mainstream guidance is about 1.6–2.2 g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day. Our guide on how much protein you need goes into more detail.

Bodyweight Protein at 1.6 g/kg Protein at 2.2 g/kg
60 kg 96 g 132 g
70 kg 112 g 154 g
80 kg 128 g 176 g
90 kg 144 g 198 g

Spreading that across three or four meals is easier than trying to catch up at dinner. Most of our dishes carry 40–80 g of protein each, so two or three meals cover most of the target.

Why is bulking harder in Bali's heat?

Bali is hot and humid for most of the year, and many people find they simply are not hungry in the middle of the day, especially after a sweaty session. A few things help:

  • Eat on a schedule, not on hunger. Set rough meal times and stick to them, even when appetite is low.
  • Choose calorie-dense meals. Wraps, burritos, pasta and rice dishes pack more energy into a portion than salads or bowls.
  • Use liquid calories. A shake with milk (or a plant milk), oats, banana and peanut butter is far easier to get down on a hot afternoon than another plate of food.
  • Drink regularly. You lose a lot of fluid sweating in this climate. Sip water through the day and consider electrolytes after long or very sweaty sessions.
  • Train at cooler times. Early morning or evening sessions usually feel better and leave your appetite in better shape.
  • Watch the café trap. Smoothie bowls and salads can look like big meals while being fairly modest in calories and protein.

What should you eat on a bulk in Bali?

Build each meal around a solid portion of protein, a generous serving of carbs (rice, potatoes, pasta, wraps, oats) and some fats. Local options help too: tempeh, eggs, chicken satay and nasi goreng with an extra egg are easy wins when you eat out, though calories at warungs vary a lot and are only ever estimates. From our own menu, these are the dishes with at least 800 kcal, sorted by protein:

A real bulking day from The Solimans menu

Here is Tuesday of Week 1 on our Balanced plan, using dishes that are actually on the menu that day:

Meal Dish kcal Protein Carbs Fat Price
Breakfast Waffle Apple Cinnamon Breakfast 758 38 g 93 g 26 g Rp 100K
Lunch Chicken Zinger Wrap 906 76 g 71 g 36 g Rp 100K
Dinner Champion's Chicken Burger 690 66 g 57 g 22 g Rp 100K
3-meal total 2,354 180 g 221 g 84 g Rp 300K
+ Extra meal Rice Chicken Mashawi 647 52 g 58 g 23 g Rp 100K
4-meal total 3,001 232 g 279 g 107 g Rp 400K

Three meals give a smaller lifter most of a bulking day; add fruit, a shake or a warung snack to finish. A bigger lifter, or someone training twice a day, might go for all four. Either way, the numbers are on every box, so you know exactly where you stand.

Plan Avg. kcal per meal Avg. protein Avg. carbs Best for
Balanced ~718 ~50 g ~65 g Most bulks; plenty of carbs for training
Vegan ~726 ~45 g ~77 g Plant-based bulks; highest calories on average
High Protein ~619 ~54 g ~29 g Topping up protein; pair with extra carbs

Most people bulking do best on Balanced, or a mix of Balanced and High Protein. You can mix plans freely, day by day. Our bulking meal plan page puts together the highest-calorie options, and macros explained covers how protein, carbs and fat fit together.

Do you need supplements to bulk?

No. Food does the heavy lifting. That said, a few supplements are widely used and well studied: protein powder is simply a convenient way to top up protein when appetite is low, and creatine monohydrate is one of the most researched supplements for strength training. Neither replaces eating enough. If you take any medication or have a health condition, check with a doctor before adding supplements. Imported supplements can be harder to find and more expensive in Bali than at home, so some people bring their own.

Common bulking mistakes in Bali

  • Skipping breakfast after a dawn surf or session. It is the easiest meal to lose. Ours arrives around 8–9 AM, Monday to Saturday.
  • Counting on weekends to catch up. Saturdays tend to be social; Sundays are a rest day for our kitchen too, so order seven days and Sunday's meals arrive with Saturday's.
  • Under-drinking. Dehydration can make training feel worse and appetite even lower.
  • Going too fast. A big surplus mostly adds fat. Patience gives a better result.

When you are ready, build your week with at least 2 meals a day for 5–7 days, and see this week's menu to plan your heaviest days around training.
